CROWD control seemed to be very effective when the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) visited Weymouth and Dorchester in July 1923!
Here, the Prince is seen returning to Weymouth Railway Station accompanied by the Mayor, Cllr W.J. Gregory, in time to catch the 5.20pm train.
Strangely, there is no sign of a crowd waiting to see the Royal visitor off.
Edward became King following his father’s death in early 1936. He caused a constitutional crisis by proposing to American Wallis Simpson and eventually abdicating.
Of interest on the building in the background are enamel signs advertising Pears Soap, Player’s Navy Mixture tobacco and other products.
n This photo comes to us once again courtesy of Andy Hutchings’ postcard collection, so thank you to Andy.
