Alas, it's all over, but what a run for England in this year's World Cup!

The team defied all expectations by reaching the semi-finals in Russia this summer but sadly it wasn't to be this time around. Weymouth harbourside was full of England fans cheering Harry Kane and co on in their crunch match against Croatia, but the Three Lions came unstuck after an extra time goal from Croatia saw them lose 2-1.

It brings back memories for those of us who can remember Italia '90 when the England men last reached the semi-finals of a World Cup only to have their hopes dashed after defeat by West Germany on penalties.

Our friends at the Dorset History Centre have turned our attentions to this Echo picture from July 5, 1990. We see fans cheering at the London Steam House in Bond Street, Weymouth, as Gary Lineker equalised to take the score to 1-1 and extra time. But, a feeling we know too well, it all ended in tears 40 minutes later when West Germany won the penalty shoot-out to reach the World Cup final.

We also have this wonderful photo of Bobby Moore, hero captain from England's 1966 World Cup winning team, visiting the Eldridge Pope brewery in Dorchester in 1980.

To date, Bobby remains the only World Cup winning football captain to have visited the county town. Let's hope things change with a visit from a World Cup winning Harry Kane in the future!
