Some residents over 60 may remember the row of shops and the derelict Trinity Cottages at the top of Chapelhay Steps in Weymouth.

Thanks to Looking Back regular Geoff Pritchard for this stunning picture showing the front of 1,2 and 3 Chapelhay Steps and 1 and 2 Trinity Cottages.

Geoff recalls: "I can remember being taken into the shop on the left by my parents in about 1952.

"I think the proprietors moved to a shop in the new shops in Gordon Row, which opened soon after this photo was taken in January 1957.

"A splendid selection of period trade signs are shown, advertising products such as Corona drinks, Players cigarettes, 7Up drinks, Lyons tea and Gold Flake tobacco.

"To the right of the picture is the corner of the former Holy Trinity School, which was badly damaged and unfit for further use as a school following the landmine which exploded nearby on November 17, 1940.

"The section of the building shown in the picture was temporarily repaired and used as a Youth Employment Office by Dorset County Council until new premises were opened on the Marsh in 1965. "The site was then cleared, the rest of the school having been demolished in 1961."

Geoff also points out that in the foreground are site works for Chapelhay Heights, then in the course of construction.

The bell turret at the end of Holy Trinity Church was demolished in the winter of 1961/2.
