Our photos of Weymouth Grammar School brought back many a memory.

Many of you attended the school, where Budmouth College is now, and remember the teachers whose photos appeared in Looking Back on August 14.

Betty Adams, nee Sheppard, said it was a lovely surprise to see several of her old teachers in Looking Back - thanks to regular Looking Back contributor Geoff Pritchard,

She remembers teachers Ted Honebon, Frank Oakley and "Bug" Welford, as the pupils used to call him.

Betty said: "I also had Mr. Shute (Latin) and Mr. Russell (Art), who had a Russian wife, I believe.

"I was at the grammar school from 1940 to 1942, during which time the bomb which destroyed the Edward Street bus garage fell.

"We all heard the bombs, dropped by a lone aircraft returning from a raid, I presume, and my mother, who had been working in the garden at Radipole Lane, saw two 'black things' (as she described them), leave the plane and was so worried as she could see the direction in which they were falling.

"Luckily, one fell in the backwater next to the school, but by the time our warning had sounded and we all filed out to the air-raid shelters in the playing field, it was all over!

"I used to walk to school and back, four times a day, from Radipole Lane. There were few cars in those days to take children to school. With rationing, the eggs from the chickens we kept and my mother's vegetables, no wonder we were healthier than a lot of youngsters now - no crisps, sweets (rationed) and plenty of exercise!"

We also heard from someone in the photo, Malcolm Jacobs, who was captioned as acting vice-principal but was actually acting principal when he finished his career,

In the original article we remarked upon how, with the exception of Frank Welford, all the teachers in the photos were former pupils who had returned as members of staff.

Malcolm tells us: "As a matter of interest, there were other former pupils who returned as

members of staff, amongst whom are Brian Butler, Colin Dawe and Geoff Stow, all physics teachers."

We were also delighted to hear from Marguerite Brown of Weymouth, another former student of the school.

She writes: "Geoff Pritchard's photos made me feel just a little elderly; not least because two of the teachers in the photos were still pupils themselves when I was at school.

"Anne Clark (formerly Anne Knight) was a sixth form prefect and Malcolm Jacobs was in my year. The pictures are interesting because not only were the teachers former pupils but several of them had children of their own in the school. Mr Oakley's son was in my year at school, Mrs Price-Jones' daughter was in the year above and Mr Honebon's daughter was a sixth form prefect. Jack Morgan's cousin was in my class. (Anne Clark's younger brother was in my year).

"Mr Welford, in addition to being senior geography teacher, was an accomplished organ player. In fact, I believe he played several instruments. However, it was his younger brother who was the school music master.

"Mr Frank Welford was known as Bug Welford and his brother as Pug Welford. (I have no idea what the origin of these nicknames was). Pug had only one lung and repeatedly informed us of this when he felt we were putting less than one hundred percent effort into our choral singing!"

Marguerite added that when she joined the grammar school the headmaster was not Mr Parsons but Lt. Col. Linnett.

Thanks to all the readers who have been in touch with their Weymouth Grammar School memories. We have reader Peter Fry to thank for all the additional photos on this page and will be returning to more school memories next week, including those of Sheila Dyer, nee Morris, which we didn't have room for this week.
