YOU may remember this photo which we originally featured on September 18 of a couple in 1939 enjoying a rest on Weymouth Esplanade outside the Tea Cabin.

Well we were flabbergasted to hear from Margaret Ayles who recognised the couple as Mr and Mrs Spencer, her great aunt and uncle.

Margaret said: "Mrs Spencer, or Aunty Nell as I knew her, was the sister of my grandmother. Mr Spencer, I cannot remember his name but I understand that he was well known in Weymouth as the ‘shoe shine man’ operating outside the Tea Cabin.

"The couple had one son Norman, who was a Weymouth character. My memory of him is dressed up as John Bull leading Weymouth Carnival. Norman married but they had no children. Needless to say they all died long ago."

Many thanks to Margaret and what a fascinating insight to this very old photo - it just goes to show the power of Looking Back!
