IT'S very recent history but it is nearly 14 years to the day since it was announced that the UK would be hosting the 2012 Olympic Games.

On July 6, 2005, the International Olympic Committee announced that London had won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games following a vote at the IOC meeting in Singapore.

Dorset became a part of this when it was announced Weymouth and Portland would host the 2012 sailing events.

This would lead to a memorable summer in the borough, which saw Ben Ainslie win gold in the men's finn class. Here's a picture of Sir Ben Ainslie receiving his gold medal after making history in Weymouth by becoming the most successful sailor in Olympic history with four successive gold medals.
