HERE'S a bit of a mystery we're hoping our readers might be able to help to clear up.

Terry Ward of East Sussex got in touch and sent us this photo of his grandfather with a statue that was in the front paved area of Elwell Manor on Rodwell Road in Weymouth.

Terry used to visit his grandparents Mr and Mrs Aaron Challoner in the 1950s and 60s when they lived in Weymouth at Elwell Manor. The Challoners moved to Weymouth in 1953 from Lancashire and Terry would travel down from Manchester as a youngster to visit.

He explains: "I was looking through some old photos and I came across this photo that I attach, it shows my grandfather with a statue that was in the front paved area of the house, over the years I have often wondered where the statue was removed to.

"I have returned to Weymouth many times and tried to find out what happened it, to no avail. I was wondering if any of your readers have any information on its whereabouts, if it is still in one piece that is.

"Perhaps you could help me in this search and finally put to rest the mystery of the disappearing statue."

Terry also tells us that Aaron Challoner and his wife owned the bookshop at 23 Trinity Street along with his aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Frank Heap, who ran a art and picture framing business at the same address.
