WE'RE going even further back in time this week from the late 1950s view of Victoria Square, Portland, which was taken by late Dorset Evening Echo photographer Harry Green.

Following its publication in which we noted some of the major changes, including the missing roundabout, the two petrol stations and the clear hillside before a housing estate was built.

Thanks to friend of Looking Back Brian Jackson, we can now enjoy this 1920s view of Victoria Square.

Brian tells us: "The double decker bus on the left has just arrived from Weymouth and the one on the right is about to return, double deckers not being permitted to Tophill until January 1969. The buses in the photograph are AEC `YC` type open tops with 30 seats upstairs and 26 below, the bodies for these vehicles cost £508.

"The later houses on the left side of Chiswell and the bottom of Queens Road had not yet been built, the garage beyond the bus on the right had arrived, its petrol pumps and booms being visible. Apart from the pick-up truck at the pumps, two taxis, a char a banc, and a small car on the left in Chiswell, traffic is conspicuous by its absence."
