MORE than 25 years ago, Radio 1 brought its annual summer roadshow to Weymouth.

Echo reader and local photographer Idris Martin has shared some photographs from 1994, when DJ Steve Wright took to the stage on Weymouth Beach.

Idris recalls how Scottish singer-songwriter Lulu was the star of the show. Having recently performed a single with Take That, there were rumours that the band themselves would appear, but the audience wasn't so lucky. Regardless, Idris remembers an atmosphere of "noise and total mayhem" as people celebrated the summer to the sounds of their favourite stars.

The Radio 1 roadshows ran from the 1970s through to the 1990s and visited coastal towns across the UK, with DJs playing live sets and meeting local people.

The final event was hosted by Chris Moyles in Brighton in 1999, before the roadshow was replaced by One Big Sunday - a series of one-day pop concerts held in major cities across the country.

These have since been replaced by the single two-day event, BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend.
