Les Ames visits patients at Portland Hospital on Christmas morning 1983
WE were sad to lose one of Portland's most loved figures, Les Ames, this year.
The veteran councillor passed away last month aged 100 and it seems fitting as we approach Christmas to share this photo of Les doing what he is best remembered for - thinking of others.
This photo was taken by a Dorset Evening Echo photographer on Christmas Day morning 1983 at Portland Hospital and shows Les as Portland Mayor with patients, staff and doctors on Calder Ward in the hospital.
No doubt Les, with his big beaming smile, did his best to spread some festive cheer to those spending Christmas Day in hospital.
