This photo of Westham Bridge in Weymouth dates from about 1960.

This bridge was opened in 1921 and is much shorter than the original 1859 bridge, which was meant to take vehicles but was initially only able to take pedestrians until further modifications and repairs were made in 1864.

You can see a seagull in the foreground and what we believe is an Austin A35 car driving across the bridge.

The road is very quiet with just two vehicles.

Recognisable on the left is St Joseph's Church and on the right would have been the miniature railway.

And you can't see it in this picture, but it would have been nearby, is the long gone South Dorset Tech, which students travelled to from all over the county.

Bernard Mills remembers: "I walked across this bridge every day of school term from Sept 1953 until July 1956, on my way to or from South Dorset Tech. Travelled from Blandford on Wilts & Dorset No 34, to Weymouth bus station."

Peter Roles recalls: "We used to walk across the bridge in the 50's to go and see the miniature railway."

Thanks to Carole Dorran of the Bygone Dorset Facebook group for these memories.
