This old picture of Ferrybridge, leading to Portland, shows a completely different link with the mainland.
The image shows the bridge that was in place from 1896 to 1985.
This iron bridge from 1896 had fallen into a state of disrepair by the 1970s and was considered unsuitable for handling the amount and weight of modern vehicles.
The £2 million bridge which replaced it, as you can see here, involved land reclamation work and the upgrading of the existing roadway leading to the bridge.
It was placed 180 metres south of the original's position.
A new channel was formed underneath the new concrete bridge to maintain the tidal flow to the Fleet.
