WE recently printed a photo of the Weymouth Young Women’s Christian Association, which had meetings held at the Sidney Hall in Weymouth.

Looking Back readers have managed to identify a few of the faces in the photo.

Sheila Greenham, now aged 84, managed to identify herself in the middle row second from the right. She said she was around 17 in the photo.

Also named in the middle row on the far right was Betty Curtis, nee Roffe, now aged 86.

Betty also identified Pat Pavey, in the back row second from the right.

She added: “I think Betty Fackley was in the middle row second from the left.”

Betty also had some memories of the American Red Cross servicemen’s club.

She said: “My mum used to work there and used to take people’s hats and coats. She also used to tapdance at the club and they’d put boards over the tables.

“I was evacuated from London and came with my grandmother. I went to school at Holy Trinity and then on to the Sidney Hall.

“I used to go to dances in the hall and mum used to come and collect me at 9.30pm which seemed very early!

“I was staying with my grandmother, sister and her cousin in Stewart’s Court, a cul-de-sac which was close to the Governor’s Lane car park in the town centre.

“I was also a member of the Girls’ Life Brigade – there was always plenty to do.

“In the Young Women’s Christian Association we used to write to the boys in the war and go to the chapel. We spent a lot of time in the Baptist Chapel and used to do all sorts of things.”
