Maureen Adams has been in touch with Looking Back to give us an update on the whereabouts of the scouts’ football trophy pictured in last week’s paper.
She writes: “In ‘Looking Back’ last week you featured a picture sent in by Keith Best of 1st Weymouth scouts and the trophy they won at a football tournament in 1957/58. My name is Maureen Adams and I am Assistant District Commissioner – Weymouth and Portland Cub Section.
“I would like you to know that my own cub pack were presented with that very trophy last Saturday, May 5 at Budmouth Community College when we won the six-a-side football tournament for cubs.
“One of our cub leaders has had it in his possession since 1996 when it was last awarded to Weymouth East Scarlet Pack at the last six-a-side.
“Since then we have had five-a-side football tournaments so could not use the original trophy.
“It is now back in circulation for our annual six-a-side future tournaments and we are the proud winners of it this year after a long lapse.
“We do have photos of winning team Chesil cub pack with the trophy.
“This team and the runners up North cub pack are representing Weymouth and Portland at the county cub scouts’ six-a-side to be held again at Budmouth on May 19 with cub packs from the whole county competing.
“Thought you might be interested that this wondrful trophy is having a new lease of life and will be well looked after.
“It certainly tells a story of Scouts enjoing football in Weymouth and Portland since 1953 when 3rd Wyke Greys won it. It will now be our jubilee trophy.”
