COASTGUARDS raced down to a beach last night thinking someone was in distress.
But a light which had been mistaken for a flare turned out to be from a Chinese lantern.
A coastguard team was sent to Chesil Beach at West Bexington at 9pm on Friday.
Anglers on the beach confirmed it was from a lantern which had floated over earlier.
