NEW services for dementia sufferers have swung into action as it is hoped others will get involved.

Memory Café and Singing for the Brain take place on alternate Wednesdays at the Community 2000 hall on Portland.

The partnership between Island Community Action and The Alzheimer’s Society has only recently launched, but organisers say they have already seen results.

Project manager for Island Community Action Katie Pascoe said: “The feedback we’ve had has been very positive.

“We had one carer tell us that the lady she helps got up for three days after the session and completed household tasks she hasn’t managed for a while.

“We really want to encourage people to come along to the Memory Café too.

“It’s a safe environment where they can get support and advice from The Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK and social workers.

“We have homemade cake and tea and displays from the Portland Museum of childhood toys, war memorabilia and old photographs of the area.

“These encourage people to start conversations.

“There is no judgement, just a lot of support.”

Jo Malyon, support services manager for the Alzheimer’s Society Dor-set said: “Singing for the Brain is something that has been going on nationwide for a number of years and has been very successful.

“Often memory of music is the last thing to go when someone is suffering from dementia.

“They may not have memories of a particular era, but they can start singing a song and remember every word.

“We would like more people to come along.

“Anyone who is suffering from dementia and their carers are very welcome.”

The services run at the hall from 10am until noon every Wednesday and alternate between the two.
