NHS staff were able to make unforgettable memories on one woman’s diamond wedding anniversary, despite her being stuck in hospital.

Sheila Cuthbert, 81, was set to celebrate 60 years since tying the knot this week, with her beloved son treating her and her husband with tickets to see popular singer-songwriter George Ezra.

But in the days leading up to the anniversary and Ezra’s performance at the Newcastle Metro Radio Arena, Mrs Cuthbert fell ill on Monday and was admitted to the care of the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust.

The 81-year-old, of Billingham, was heartbroken to realise she would not be leaving hospital in time to catch the show on Tuesday. But hospital staff decided to step in to make a memorable occasion for the Cuthbert family.

After seeing her disappointment, Ward 41 nurses put their heads together and agreed they would not let Mrs Cuthbert miss out on seeing her favourite popstar famed for his unmistakable bass-baritone voice.

Dorset Echo:

Ward sister Kristel Brown played her own George Ezra CD for Mrs Cuthbert, before revealing the star of the show, trainee nursing associate, Adam Morgan, who picked up his guitar and to put on a proper show for his patient.

Mr Morgan serenaded the 81-year-old Ezra fan with a whole host of his top tracks, with the rest of Ward 41 and the Cuthbert family touched by the heartfelt gesture.

Ward sister Ms Brown said: “It was heart-breaking to see Sheila’s face when she realised she couldn’t make it to see her musical hero – but I think she found a whole new hero in Adam.

“There was a smile across every single face on the ward, and everyone was toe tapping along to the music.

“No-one wants to spend their wedding anniversary in hospital, but I think we’ve all made it a special one for Sheila and her family.”

Mrs Cuthbert said: “I didn’t expect to be here for my 60th wedding anniversary, but sometimes life takes you by surprise.

“I’m a huge fan of George’s so I was really sad when I realised I wouldn’t make it to his concert.

“Then along came Adam, with the voice of an angel, and my whole family got to enjoy the performance with me.

“It’s certainly an anniversary that I will never forget, thanks to Adam, Kristel and all the staff on Ward 41.”
