The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have moved out of Kensington Palace and into their new home Frogmore Cottage.

The couple are settling into their new life away from London on the Windsor Estate, having carried out extensive renovations to the house, as they wait for their first child to put in an appearance.

Harry and Meghan, whose baby is due later this month, have split their household from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are still based at Kensington Palace.

The Sussexes have lived at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace since their engagement and following their wedding.

When their new official residence was announced in November last year, Kensington Palace said: “Windsor is a very special place for their Royal Highnesses and they are grateful that their official residence will be on the estate.”

The estimated cost to the taxpayer of the renovations is £3 million.

Work on the listed property in Berkshire – including changing it from staff apartments into one mansion – overran and it was reported that the couple made constant design changes, meaning the builders fell behind schedule.

The duke and duchess, who will foot the bill for furnishings, are said to have hired former Soho House interior designer Vicky Charles to transform their new pad.

With just weeks to go until the royal baby’s due date, Meghan’s hospital bag is likely to be already packed for when she goes into labour.

She is reported to have chosen a maternity unit close to Windsor, rather than opting for the Lindo Wing in London like Kate did with her three children.

Frogmore Cottage, which is about half a mile south of the Queen’s favourite residence Windsor Castle, is close to Frogmore House where the duke and duchess held their evening wedding reception.

Frogmore House is also where Harry and Meghan posed for their official engagement photos. It has been a Royal Residence since 1792 and was built in around 1680 by Charles II’s architect.

In 1923, the Queen’s parents – the future George VI and Queen Elizabeth – spent part of their honeymoon there.

The name Frogmore is derived from the frogs which have always lived in the low lying marshy area.

Harry and Meghan’s office will be based at Buckingham Palace.
