IN 1949 I was serving on the Royal Navy supply ship ‘Fort Beauharnais’ in Portland Harbour.
The lovely people of Fortuneswell made us young seaman very welcome, especially the lovely young girls who would take us to their local dances and cinema.
It would be great if anyone can recall the old Fort B as she was known, young ladies then names Esme, Doreen and Peggy Stone in particular come to mind.
I remember the film ‘Morning Departure’ was made in Portland with HMS Maidstone as the submarine depot ship being used in the film.
It would be great to hear from anyone who can recall those long-ago times.
One last thought, I will never forget my first pint of scrumpy and the headache afterwards.
My contact number is 0208 8944704.
I would appreciate a call from anyone who remembers.
