FAMILY, friends and former work colleagues paid a fitting tribute to the late Martin Hewson with a memorial cricket day at Redlands.

Hewson, who passed away suddenly earlier this year, captained Portland Red Triangle and was a huge fan of the game before his untimely death at the age of 41.

The sun shone on the Wey-mouth sports venue as three teams made up of past and present employees from DEK Printing Machines, where Hewson used to work, played a round-robin tournament in front of around 200 spectators.

“It was fantastic,” said Hewson’s friend and event organiser Trevor Warren. “Martin’s family said afterwards it was exactly what he would have wanted and he would have loved it.

“The weather was great and there was some competitive cricket played. Some of the lads can play a bit and others were there just for the enjoyment of it.

“It was good that so many came and it was great to see people there who wouldn’t normally go to watch a game of cricket – that made it all worthwhile.

“In the end, it was all about getting Martin’s family, friends and work colleagues enjoying cricket and remembering him through the game.”

Mark’s Marauders, captained by Mark Meadon, won the round-robin, beating Dave’s Dynamos and Darren’s Dreamers.

The event also raised money for the Portland Red Triangle youth team, a side Hewson coached.
