BARRY Lawley’s tremendous service to local football will be celebrated on Boxing Day with a special charity match at Grove Corner (11am).

Darren Whyton’s All Stars will lock horns with Nick Preston’s Old Boys with all the proceeds from the game going to the Chalbury Unit at Weymouth Hospital where Lawley has been receiving care for dementia.

Lawley, pictured, is renowned for being one of Dorset football’s most popular characters.

As well as having a long affinity with Portland United, he has also been involved at Bridport and several other clubs in what has been a lifetime association with the game, both as a player and a coach.

Darren Whyton told Echosport: “Barry played for Portland around 50 years ago and has also been part of the management team here.

“The service he gave the club was fantastic and we are hoping to raise as much cash as possible in support of him.

“His wife and daughter have decided that all the proceeds should go to the Chalbury Unit, where Barry has been for the last 15 months, and it would be great to see as many people as possible turn out for the game, whether it be to play or just to watch.

“Pete Turrell is going to referee it for us and there will also be refreshments, including mulled wine and mince pies, and a raffle.”

The likes of Brendon King, Gavin Sandrey, Dickie Borthwick, Ian Hutchinson, Andy Turrell, Willie Gibson, and Alex and Simon Browne are all hoping to take part in the game.

Whyton added: “Anyone that knows Barry can play and it promises to be a great occasion.”
