STEVE Reynolds reckons this month could prove to be a pivotal one in Upwey & Broadwey’s season.

Not only are Reynolds’ men just three points off the top in the Dorset Senior League but they are also still involved in the Senior Trophy, as they look to record an historic double.

The Weymouth outfit are scheduled to entertain local rivals Portland United Reserves at Redlands tomorrow (2pm) but, following the recent inclement weather, there is every chance that clash could now be postponed.

Reynolds told Echosport: “Redlands is a swamp and with more rain expected today, I really cannot see it happening.

“If it is on then I see no reason why we cannot win it as we should be at full strength.

“For the first time in a long while there is real competition for places and that should keep everyone on their toes.

“If I am honest, I don’t even know what our best team is at the minute, and it is up to the players to stake their claim.”

Commenting on his expectations for the rest of the season, Reynolds went on to add: “We have got ourselves in a good position to do something this year but now is the time to really push on.

“We have got Portland, Chickerell and Sturminster Marshall all at home in the league this month, along with a quarter-final tie against Witchampton in the Senior Trophy, so it is a big period for us that could well define our season.”

If tomorrow’s derby does go ahead, it would also be a massive game for Portland following a run of three straight defeats.

The Blues are six points off the top in sixth spot and need to up their game quickly in order to stay in touch.

Portland player-manager Chris Hicks said: “We experienced a couple of dodgy games before Christmas where we really let ourselves down, but a big game like this should get the lads fully focused again.”

James Turrell is unavailable while Steve Churchill is a doubt following an injury lay-off.

Finally, Chickerell United’s bid to strengthen their position at the summit may also have to remain on hold due to the recent wet weather.

The Chickens are due to host basement boys Okeford United tomorrow (2pm) but boss Steve Coward is already considering other plans, including a potential scouting mission.

He said: “We will prepare as normal but if it is off, at least it will give us another couple of training sessions to get the Christmas pudding out of the lads’ bellies.

“It will also give me an opportunity to go and watch another local game elsewhere.”
