CLUB president Des Quick claims that Weymouth & Portland are building a sustainable club across the board in a bid for success in the long term.
As Weymouth, the Monmouth Avenue outfit withdrew its first XV, who are due to travel to East Dorset in Dorset & Wilts Two today (3pm) from Southern Counties South last term, due to a lack of players.
But having renamed the club back in May and unveiled a new plaque to commemorate to new era for the club last weekend, Quick claims there is a heap of positivity not just around the first team.
He told Echosport: “I think it has been demonstrated that whatever we do has to be sustainable, building up one team just gets you short-term results and I think that has got through now.
“What we are trying to do now is establish a second team with a reasonable strength to the point that we can start to initiate our colts to senior rugby.”
With the club boasting teams from under-6s all the way through to senior level, a sizeable crowd watched the first XV triumph over Dorchester Seconds last weekend, something that Quick was elated with, as well as the team going top of the league.
“We had a really good crowd when we beat Dorchester for our first home match as Weymouth & Portland and I think everyone really enjoyed themselves,” he added.
“It’s good to kick off with a couple of wins, albeit that the first team is a couple of leagues down from where we were last season, that’s just one of those things, we just have to keep together and start again.
“It’s a whole club approach rather than any particular team, and if people buy into that then you don’t just have successful teams, you have a successful club.”
The club’s second team host Swanage & Wareham Thirds at Monmouth Avenue, in Dorset & Wilts Division Three today (3pm).
Elsewhere, in Southern Coun-ties South, Dorchester’s first team travel to Wimborne (3pm), and Puddletown are at home to Bournemouth Thirds in Dorset & Wilts Division Two (3pm).
