TWO Castle Cove Sailing Club members travelled to Rutland Water Sailing Club to compete at the End of Season Inland Championships.

Held over two days, Robert Smith and Nick Grace were among the 30-strong fleet in the Contender class.

At the same time, another fleet of 20 boats were also competing at Rutland and this made for a very busy starting area on the lake.

Competitors faced very cold conditions with strong winds and deceptive sunshine on day one.

Grace led the fleet with two second places and one first after the first day of racing.

Day two brought with it rain and much less wind than previously. Racing was much closer and Smith put in a good effort, finishing above mid-fleet in both races of the day.

Grace, keen to keep his lead, was pleased to find out that nearest rival Simon Mussell had posted a fifth place in one of the races to drop down the fleet.

However, another competitor was sailing particularly well.

Stuart Jones managed to win the event by only one point from Grace, who finished second overall. Smith also stood his ground as he finished 14th overall in a fleet of top sailors.
