Abbotsbury 228-5 (20pts) beat Broadstone 163 (6pts) all-out

TEENAGER Richard Runyard carried off the man of the match honours in his first appearance for Abbotsbury.

Runyard, 17, belied his tender years to remain unbeaten on 57 then took 3-34 in a seven-over spell as Abbotsbury got their Sunday Division Three campaign off to a winning start.

Swans' stand-in skipper David Trotter won the toss and chose to bat.

Openers Grant Vink and George Thomas got off to a steady start before Aussie import Vink gloved one to first slip off a rebound from the keeper.

Thomas forged good partnerships with Nick Kneebone (27) and Runyard before falling to a bottom edge on 38.

With overs and wickets in hand, Abbotsbury's powerhouse mid-order took command with Frank Pittman notching 20 and Sean Ford a quickfire 39 to push the score to 228.

Broadstone's chase got off to a poor start when Trotter removed one of the openers with his first ball but a steady second wicket stand saw the visitors well up with the run rate.

But skipper Trotter pulled a masterstroke pairing Western Australian Vink with Runyard in a youthful attack which stemmed the flow then smashed through the visitors batting order. Vink taking 4-34.

Their efforts were matched with some wonderful catches - particularly from Frank Pittman and Grafton Straker - as the opposition was dismissed for 163.

Trotter said: "It was pleasing the way we held all our catches. In our last pre-season match our fielding had been poor so we decided to turn up early on Sunday for a warm up and catching drills. The hard work paid off.

"Our three teenagers, George Thomas, Grant Vink and Richard Runyard all played a part in our victory. The future at Abbotsbury looks very rosy."
