VETERANS' vice-captain Terry Garrett won the Bill Caddy Putter at Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club.

Garrett, who also recorded the lowest gross score in Division Two, carded a fine 65 and won by one shot.

Competition was very keen and there were five nett scores in the 60s with only three shots between them.

The veterans were delighted that Bill Caddy's widow Olive came along to the clubhouse to present her husband's trophy to the winner.

Caddy is something of a legend at Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club and even those who never met him will have seen his famous putter that hangs in a prominent position over the bar.

He was club captain in 1971 and president in 1979 but he was better known for his building skills and the work he put in for the club.

In 1969 the old clubhouse was destroyed by fire and a temporary building was erected in it's place.

Thanks largely to Bill and his building skills, that temporary building lasted for 32 years.

In addition he did a lot of work on the course including building dry-stone walls and a couple of St Andrews-style stone bridges.
