WEYMOUTH Cougars have hailed their football festival as one of the best ever.

More than 90 teams took part in the two-day tournament, which was held at the Marsh.

Weymouth and Portland mayor and Cougars' honorary president Howard Legg was guest of honour at the feast of football.

Cougars' Sixes has been a regular part of Weymouth's sporting calendar since 1992 with many clubs returning year after year and often travelling large distances.

This year was no exception with entries from as far afield as Oxford, Milton Keynes, Cullompton and Kettering as well as our usual array of Hampshire and Dorset teams.

Weymouth dominated the mini-soccer tournament with their teams winning both the under-8 and under-10 sections defeating Poole Borough in both finals.

Kings Park Dynamos took the under-9 age group overcoming a gallant Terras side.

The six-a-side tournament was one of the most competitive to date with several finals being settled in extra-time.

Chickerell United showed their strength by winning the under-11 and under-13 sections defeating Dorchester Panthers and Cougars respectively.

Oxford-based team Radley Boys also were victorious in two age groups beating Weymouth to win both the under-12 and under-15 finals.

Devon provided the under-14 champions with Cullompton-side Kentisbeare Colts defeating Kettering-based Ise Lodge United in an epic duel.

Bridport Juniors ran out winners of the under-15 beating a brave Weymouth Colts team after extra-time.

Cougars' spokesman Jim Halls said: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people without whose help this competition would not be possible.

"To Jake of AAA Transport for the loan of his lorry and to our small army of helpers, too numerous to name, for organising and running the barbecue and refreshment area.

"A special word of thanks must go to our referees who give up their weekends freely and whose contribution is crucial to the success of the tournament and to Simon of Delta Plumbing for his support both this weekend and throughout the year.

"Finally to the managers, players, mums, dads and everyone who attended or had any input into making this one of our most successful tournaments. We thank you all."
