fisherman Steve Clements put on an inspirational performance for England as they retained their Home Nations crown in Weymouth.

In a two-day event in the resort, the host country proved too strong for their competitors with Clements and his team-mate Cliff Newbold finishing the top two scorers with 200 and 194 points respectively.

Scotland's Hughie Smith came third with 182.35.

England ended up with a total of 807.48 that destroyed the rest of the field.

Ireland finished second with 601.07, Scotland came third with 566.49 and Wales fourth with 563.13.

Among the fish caught were conger eels over 50lb, tope over 30lb and plenty of breen, dogfish and wrasse.

Clements, who lives in Weymouth, said: "It was a comfortable win and I think we did a lot of damage to them.

"Having local knowledge obviously helped but everyone who took part knows these waters very well.

"Wales were even doing their national selection here all last week.

"No matter how well you know things you have still got to go out and do it and the weekend proved a resounding success which is a good start for the rest of the year.

"It was the first of the nationals of the year and they are all building up to the World Championships in Portugal in September when hopefully we will be able to retain our title."
