IT became a battle of the past and present members of the PGA Cup team in the Future Asset Management Pro-am at Royal Porthcawl.

Wessex Golf Centre professional Jon Bevan, who will be part of the GB & Ireland side that will take on America in the state of Georgia in September, overcame Richard Dinsdale by one shot.

Dinsdale, whose father John is club secretary at Porthcawl, played in the last team to tackle the United States two years ago.

Bevan clearly loves the Porthcawl links for it was there that he qualified for the PGA Cup team last month through his high finish in the Glenmuir Professional Champion-ship.

This time the Weymouth-based player shot a three-under-par 69.

The home quartet won the team prize with a seven-under-par 137.

Home pro Peter Evans led club captain William de Lloyd, former county star Mike Chugg and improving one-handicapper Jonathan Bale to victory.

Once again the day raised a substantial sum for the Tenovus cancer charity.
