WEYMOUTH 141 all-out (22pts) beat WIMBORNE & COLEHILL 123 all-out (6pts) by 17 runs

WEYMOUTH skipper Dean Janaway was ecstatic after his side grabbed their fifth win on the spin in the Dorset Funeral Plan Premier League.

Janaway described this clash at Redlands as "one of the best games" he has ever played in and went on to praise his men for the spirit they showed in the field after a disappointing batting display.

The hosts were dismissed for just 141 but Wimborne were unable to hold their nerve at the end despite only needing 22 runs with two wickets in-hand.

Janaway said: "We batted poorly and we lost wickets frequently, some to a bit of bad luck, some to poor shot selection and the rest to good bowling.

"We lost the toss on what was a pretty good pitch considering the weather we have had but to be fair I think we would have bowled first as well.

"I got out in the second over while backing up. I was out of the crease and when Jim Ryall hit the ball straight back at the bowler it flicked his hand and went on to the stumps. I could not believe it and that is the first time that has ever happened to me.

"At the break I said to the lads that we were definitely capable of defending our total and to be fair to them they all switched on and were absolutely magnificent.

"Matt Lawes and Dave Trotter provided us with a good tight opening spell before Michael Pearce got the breakthrough with a couple of wickets.

"Laurie Whyte and Dan Belt then came on and were excellent again with Laurie taking four wickets and Dan three.

"We never allowed them to feel at ease. We kept the pressure on in the field and to be honest I think it was one of the best games I have ever played in.

"They needed 22 with two wickets left when Jim pulled off a fantastic leg-side stumping, which came off the bowling of Matt Lawes. Dan then got the last one to finish things off.

"When you receive an accolade like the Dorset Funeral Plan League Team of the Month before a game it is usually the kiss of death but the lads were superb and we certainly enjoyed the champagne afterwards."

The hosts never looked comfortable in their innings with wickets falling at regular intervals. After Janaway had been run-out, his fellow opener Ryall was clean-bowled by Will (2-29) for just 9.

Paul Payne (6) then got trapped leg before by the same bowler and at 39-3 the Seasiders looked in big trouble.

Tom England (39) and Tom Steadman (26) put up some resistance but Ben Doidge (0) and the tailenders all went cheaply. Hills (3-25), Randall (2-26) and House (1-38) were the other wicket takers.

In reply, Steele (28) and Cole (24) put on a 50 partnership to get Wimborne off to a good start but when Pearce (2-20) bowled Cole, Weymouth began to put extreme pressure on the visiting batsmen.

House (0), Will (12) Steele and Hills (6) were the next to depart as the Seasiders reduced their opponents to 89-5.

But it was when Handley (12) was caught by Whyte off the bowling of Belt (3-32) that the rot really set in as Wimborne then lost both Cornish and Hardwick to ducks.

Randall (24) was then stumped leaving the visitors' last pair requiring 22 runs to win.

In the end they managed just five more before Ryall caught Cook (2). Whyte ended with figures of 4-24 and Matt Lawes took 1-30.
