n By DILL BUTCHER Unseeded Sam Marland progressed to the quarter-finals of the men's singles and on the evidence of his three-sets victory over stalwart Alan Cash at Greenhill last night he will prove quite a handful for any opponent in the last eight.

The 22-year-old from Osmington, a straight sets winner over Luke Bartlett on Monday, attacked the net well as he glided home 6-1 in the first set.

But credit must go to Cash who dug in to keep this clash going for two hours, fighting back to take the second 6-4 following a blip in concentration from the youngster.

Marland used all of his 6ft 5in frame to maximum effect in the deciding set, maintaining pressure on the Bridport veteran at the net who was finding it increasingly difficult to gain any headway with his trademark lobs and passes from the base-line Strong forehands and consistent serving from Marland saw him take the third 6-1 while defeated Cash just had time for a coffee before he took to the court again alongside Brid-port sidekick Liam Thomas for a men's doubles with the Roberts brothers - Peter and Richard.

But there was only enough light to complete the opening set - a 50-minute scrap that the former edged 7-5 - and that game will be concluded later this week.

Early on Richard Roberts was also in singles action against local league three player Eddie Evans and it was Roberts who waltzed home 6-1 in the first set after charging to a 5-0 lead.

Evans was a much tougher cookie to crack in the second though where, despite suffering an early break, he broke back later to level at 4-4 in a match of long base-line rallies.

However, a determined Roberts instantly broke again before serving out to take the second 6-4 and with it the match.

In other games 17-year old Doug Cartwright from Dorch-ester upset veteran Jon May in straight sets while one of a number of doctors in the tourney, Jon DeKretser alongside cohort Chris Nelson overcame youngsters Jordan Frederick (12) and Chris Westhead (14) 6-2, 6-2.
