DESPITE a spirited performance by the holders St Andrew's Primary School, there was no denying Southill their first ever win in the year three Mini-Tennis Competition.

The team of Millen Hurrion, Cameron Thomson, Joe James and Alex Jones just squeezed out the three times champions on a points count-back after the final was all square at three matches each.

More than 30 children, aged six to eight, from the Weymouth primary schools, St Andrew's, St John's, Radipole, Southill, St Nicholas and Holy Trinity, competed for the Pengilly Cup at Weymouth Sports Club.

A series of singles and doubles matches were played and the children took part in fun agility and co-ordination skills specially selected for their age group. Organised by Weymouth Tennis Club, the popular event is now in its sixth year of sponsorship by Pengilly solicitors, and gives youngsters their first taste of competition, playing on a reduced size court with foam balls.

Additional prizes were awarded to Lloyd Roberts (St John's) for the most promising new player and to Emily Lambley (St John's) together with Connor Smith (St Andrew's) for the best match. Every child who took part received tennis goodies and a certificate.

Mini-tennis co-ordinator Chris Penny was very pleased with the turnout. "It is encouraging to see so many children with relatively little experience enjoying competing for their school. There were some terrific matches, worthy of any Wimbledon final."
