WEYMOUTH 152 (6pts) lost to BROADSTONE II 156-7 (20pts) by three wickets

WEYMOUTH were dealt a second defeat of the season by lowly Broadstone Seconds as the second-bottom side triumphed by three wickets in their County Division One clash at Redlands.

The Seasiders were handed a whopping 57 extras by a wayward Broadstone bowling attack, but contrived to make just 152 as the visitors reached their target with three batsmen to spare.

It was another costly performance with the bat for stand-in skipper Dean Janaway’s men, who opted to bat first after winning the toss.

Janaway showed faith in young duo Harry Mitchell and Jack Taylor, making his first team debut, as the pair opened the batting.

But while Mitchell (17) fared slightly better than Taylor (0), the pair were both cheaply removed by Ben Simmons (3-20).

Simmons then dismissed Kieron Womble (0) leg before as Weymouth slipped to 56-3.

Dom Webb (17) and Tom England (34) rebuilt but when Webb fell to Rob Whittle (2-21), Janaway (0) soon followed as the hosts stumbled to 82-5.

More profligate bowling, this time from Ross Tooley (2-41) who bowled 12 extras in six overs, helped Weymouth’s score along, while Jack Sapsworth (10), Cube Whyte (8) and Tim Guyett (8) boosted the home side to 152.

In reply, Broadstone openers Simon Leadbitter (12) and Tooley (24) made a steady start, building to 40-0, but three quick wickets for Cube Whyte (2-31) and Webb (1-21) checked Broadstone at 53-3.

Weymouth then turned the screw and looked favourites at 102-6, Mitchell’s off-spin (2-35) again proving dangerous, but a crucial 48-run partnership between Alex Warren (26no) and Charlie Groves (20) put the visitors within touching distance of victory.

And Warren cracked a four off Mitchell to end the contest and capture Broadstone’s second win of the campaign.

Weymouth captain Janaway told Echosport he was “really disappointed” with the way his side batted.

He said: “I was just really disappointed with the way we batted, me especially giving my wicket away terribly. There were so many soft dismissals, off full tosses, and we should have been scoring 200 against that attack.

“We just needed a bit more application with the bat really and to bat our 45 overs. But in the field it was a great effort. Everyone bowled well and fielded well, Harry took three catches, but we just didn’t have enough runs.

“We jiggled the order around and got off to a decent start, we just ended up losing wickets. But I was pleased with Jack, a wicket on his debut and he looks like he’s going to be a great player.”
