With slightly fewer entrants this year at the Weymouth Town Tennis Tournament it has been decided that finals day will be brought forward to next Saturday, July 21 instead of a traditional Sunday climax.

And the first match on court that day for an early 9.30am start will be Budmouth School's Elliot May versus All Saints' Jordan Frederick - battling out the boy's 16s and under final after coming through Saturday's group stage and semi-finals.

Young Frederick, just 12-years old, beat all-comers in group B including May (4-3 in games) who qualified for the last four with the best record of three group runners-up.

Eighteen boys contested the under-16s, each playing five group matches (the best of seven games each time), and it was May's lengthy one-set semi-final tussle with Alex Wood (13) that ended the day's play.

The Budmouth table tennis specialist showed his competitive side as he managed to overturn a 4-2 losing deficit to win four games on the trot including an epic last game where fortunately Wood spawned several chances at the net with wayward smashes.

Meanwhile Frederick wasted little time booking his place in the final as he overran Colfox's Steve Pellow (14) 6-0 - his trademark power forehands too much for the clearly tiring Bridport youngster.

Elsewhere on juniors day at Greenhill, All Saints' Levi Gale won the boys' 11 and under event topping a league of seven entrants with 27 games, just one ahead of runner-up Ben Skid-more after each player had played six mini-matches (best of five games).

Meanwhile the girls were able to bring their two events to a conclusion nearby at the Melcombe Regis Club with the honours going to All Saints' Zoe Acutt, who defeated Wey Valley's Sophie Janssen in the 16s and under final, and fellow Radipole Primary School pupils Abigail Jolliffe and Annie Redding contested an exciting 11s and under final, the former sneaking it 8-6.

Last Friday saw the best evening's senior play so far and there was plenty of excitement to enthral spectators in the mixed as the youthful exuberance of Tom Legg and Zoe Acutt just got the better of the canny experience of Clive Stow and Emma Gardiner in a rip-roaring three-setter that the former edged 8-6 in the final set.

While all that was going on Tom Flowerdew was enjoying a fair old scrap with Swanage's Andy Moore who had led 4-2 in the first set.

However Durham University's Flowerdew was able to level at 5-5 when, sadly, Moore was forced to retire with injury.

Finally Peter Notley will also feature in the singles quarters after his long two-sets victory over Asa Cardiff ended 7-5, 6-3 with deuces aplenty over the one hour and 45 minutes.
