CLIFF Moreton, a champion in singles and doubles many times at Greenhill, may be feeling a little sore today after playing around three hours of tennis last night to progress in both men's events to set up two more clashes tonight.

First, big-serving Moreton saw off the challenge of Douglas Cartwright in the singles (6-0, 6-1) before teaming up with usual partner Clive Stow for a see-sawing doubles battle with Paul Mason and Matt Brook.

The doctors were giving it their all in the opening set and following an early break of the Stow serve they found themselves 4-1 to the good.

Later on Mason saw his serve broken on a double fault (4-3) but a shock was back on the cards as a superb backhand lob by Brook beyond Stow earned another break on the Stow serve for 5-3.

In the next game Brook saw his service game beaten as Moreton, exchanging blows with the server, ended the game with an exquisite backspin drop (5-4).

Despite this Moreton couldn't hold as the doctors took a second set point when Brook beat a forehand that clipped the sideline (6-4).

After this setback the former champions began to rise in the ascendancy after Mason failed to back up the first set win with a hold of serve, losing it to 30.

Stow held for 2-0 and together with Moreton they kept their noses in front throughout the set - the latter finishing it with a highly efficient serving and volleying game to love for 6-2.

The third set, played in dwindling light, saw Mason broken to 15 but then Stow should really have held at 40-0 but somehow the doctors fought back to take a second break point with a fine Mason volley.

Amazingly service continued to be broken until game eight of the set when Moreton held to 15 and the stalemate was broken for a 5-3 advantage.

Now Mason just had to hold and it looked like he would at 40-0 but that fizzled out to deuce and then Moreton pounced to bring up match point with a winner right down the centre.

At 9.25pm, and a shade under two hours played, Stow ended it at the first attempt with a delightful cross court drive to set up an clash with the Tim Mason and Tom Flowerdew combination tonight.

An ankle injury forced Liam Thomas to withdraw ahead of his singles encounter with Jon Samuelson who was awarded the match and now faces Moreton tonight in the quarter-finals.
