SOUTH and West Dorset athletes Peter Horne and Peter Thornton both produced fantastic performances at the Dorset County Primary Schools Championships at the Ashdown Leisure Centre in Poole.

The boys' team may have only finished fourth with 24 points but the St Osmund's Middle School duo were both outstanding in their respective events.

Horne shattered the year six 600m record that was set in 1990 by four seconds with a time of 43.83secs before Thornton triumphed in the year six high jump with a leap of 1.34m.

Puddletown's Michael Ross, who attends St Mary's Middle School, was also victorious. He claimed the year six throwing title with a distance of 46.85m.

South and West Dorset's girls' team bettered their male compatriots by winning their section with 27 points.

North Dorset came runners-up with 25 ahead of East Dorset with 22, Bournemouth with 21 and Poole with 19.

Outstanding performances for the county came from Southwell Primary School's Megan Bargery in the year six 55m hurdles (10.37secs), St Andrew's Primary School's Rachel Drumbrell in the year four long jump (3.51m) and St George's Primary School's Saxon Roy in the year five long jump (3.64m).

The success of both teams caused manager Don Whistance, who teaches at Conifers Primary School in Weymouth, to call for improved facilities in South Dorset.

Speaking after the event, he said: "The results over the years prove that we have the talent in the area. But have we the desire to further enhance the sporting lives of our children by providing them with a modern athletics track as a legacy to the forthcoming Olympics in 2012?

"The children in South Dorset with athletic ability have sadly been let down over the years and it would be a move in the right direction if we could find some influential people who could organise an effective campaign to provide improved athletics facilities here.

"At the King's Park Athletics Centre in Bournemouth and the Ashdown Athletics Centre in Poole the children run and compete on all-weather tracks. Whereas in Weymouth, we have a track where when it rains it becomes waterlogged and often causes our Area Championships to be abandoned."
