PORTLAND TOWN VETS 3

WINDGREEN CORFE MULLEN 2

PORTLAND Town went top of the Veterans’ League West Division with a 3-2 victory over Corfe Mullen.

Town arguably made this win look harder than it might have been but, just as in their last game, they got off to a quick start and it was Alex Counter who put through strike partner Shane Maguire to put his side 1-0 up.

After great wing play from Rob Squibb, Maguire quickly made it two for him and Town.

Elliot Gould almost made it three with a fine diving header only to see the keeper save well.

After hitting five in his last game, Counter missed several gilt-edged chances to put Town further ahead and this failure to kill off their opposition resulted in Corfe finding a way back into the game with a goal straight from a corner.

Town continued to make chance after chance through great midfield play from the returning Dave Eglon alongside Adam Dell.

The second half continued in the same way with Paul Gould pulling the strings all over the park. Town continued to make clear chances but failed to capitalise on what was becoming a very boggy pitch.

However, with the hail lashing down Corfe managed to equalise. A change was needed for Town and came in the form of the mercurial Paul Barber. Town went to a three at the back allowing Colin Judge to push further forward.

With Lee Whisselle and Tony Morris working hard on the flanks, Town went for the kill and succeeded as a pinpoint free-kick by Dave Eglon was headed in by man-of-the-match Paul Gould to give Town a late, great win.
