WEYMOUTH St Paul’s Harrier Dot Fraser claimed two golds in a three-medal haul at the European Masters Indoor Championships in Madrid.

Fraser, an octogenarian, took 60m gold and 200m silver in the women’s 80+ category before stepping down to the Great Britain women’s 75+ squad to claim 4x200 relay gold.

Speaking to Echosport about her triumph, Fraser admitted she nearly missed the flight to Spain due to inclement weather.

She said: “We didn’t know whether we were going to get there because of the snow. We got up to Birmingham and stayed the night, then our friend said it was snowing.

“She said, ‘right, everyone get up, we’re going!’ But our accommodation was very nice and we had to get two trains to the track.

“It was very cold there but we really enjoyed ourselves. We had a good laugh and a good journey back.

“If I do well it’s a bonus and if you don’t then you just try harder next time. It just depends who’s there.”

Fraser’s medal treble backs up her display at the European Masters Athletics Championships in Aarhus, Denmark last year, when she won three golds for Great Britain.

Fraser’s next major meeting will be the British Masters in Birmingham in August.
