THE Dorchester & District Evening League is underway with top-flight Martinstown suffering an upset in the Doug Read Cup with Division Three side Winfrith taking their scalp.

Martinstown were restricted to 71-6 including two run-outs and some miserly bowling by Whyte, who conceded just seven runs from his three overs.

Simon Goldsack’s 34 not out steered Winfrith home by six wickets.

Both of last year’s finalists have been in action as Bere Regis began the defence of their title with a good win over Dewlish.

Dean Rogerson was their man of the match with 52 runs and one wicket for just one run as Bere won by 35 runs.

However, losing finalists Abbotsbury were well beaten by St George’s, for whom Simon Proffitt’s 32 not out and two wickets for two runs proved too much for the Swans, for whom only Nick Kneebone managed double figures in their 83-run defeat.

Cosmos also progressed with a comfortable victory over Dorchester Colts.

Bere Regis and St George’s were also successful in Division One of the league, defeating Puddletown and Plush respectively.

St George’s 159-4 owed much to Matt Randall with 79 not out and to Proffitt’s 46. Sean Walbridge’s 2-6 in three overs left Plush well short.

In Division Two, Cosmos and Cerne Valley played each other twice, with Cosmos coming out on top both times.

At Dorchester Rec, Luke Raines’ three wickets for one run held Cosmos down to 84-9, but tight bowling throughout left Cerne 10 runs short.

In Cerne, the scores were much higher – the home side’s 142-2 being overhauled with Paul Collins’ 63 and Mitchell 77 not out giving Cosmos a nine-wicket win.

Division Three games have seen Winfrith beat Puddletown Rugby Club by six wickets and Dorchester Casuals overcome Puddletown Reserves by 17 runs.

The Reserves fared better against Frampton, who were indebted to Chas Duerdoth’s 43 in their 93-7 and to James Pretty with three wickets for 15 and Brad James 2-15 in Puddletown’s reply.

However, Puddletown showed the value of a good team performance, coming out on top by three wickets with just two balls to spare.
