SPORTS Leaders from Budmouth College, hosted the Year Five Badminton in Schools Initiative (BISI) festival.

During the event, the primary school students learnt new skills, developed their co-ordination and tried out a variety of activities linked to skills necessary for playing badminton.

Students from Conifers and Beechcroft primaries worked together in small groups and rotated around a variety of activities which were led by the sixth-form students and younger sports ambassadors.

School sports co-ordinator, Jo Ray said that the event was hugely successful.

The Year Five students were given the opportunity to try out new skills as well as make new friends from other schools within the Budmouth family.

The Year 12/13 students are studying for their BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science, which includes gaining the Level Three award in Higher Sports Leadership and the Level Two award in Community Sports Leadership.

Throughout this course they must learn to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and enjoyable physical activity sessions for young people.

Ray said: “The younger Budmouth sports leaders are excellent role models for the primary children and proved to be excellent young coaches and at the end of the festival each student received a certificate of participation and details of local clubs in Weymouth who offer junior badminton coaching sessions.”
