MARTIN Horton carded a memorable gross 69, crowned by a glorious hole-in-one, in Bridport men’s Sunday individual Stableford.

Horton carded a score of 44 points and a gross score of 69, his round including 13 pars, one birdie and a hole-in-one on the par four seventh to lift the President’s Putter.

The second man in division one, Lewis Craddock also impressed, his round of 71 earning him 42 points and including 12 pars and three birdies.

Andrew McLeary, winner of division three, amassed 40 points but the division two scores were much more modest and it only took 36 points for Russell Weller to secure victory.

Results: Division One: 1 Martin Horton (10) 44 pts; 2 Lewis Craddock (5) 42; 3 Marc Harwood (9) 39. Division Two: 1 Russell Weller (18) 36 pts; 2 Ian Thacker (16) 33; 3 Kieran McAllister (17) 32. Division Three: 1 Andrew McLeary (19) 40 pts; 2 (acb) Lawrence Turner (21) 34; 3 (acb) Rod Condliffe (20) 34.

Elsewhere, there was a light-hearted match between Jack’s Jokers and Ian’s Infantry, with the Jokers winning 7½ – 2½. Originally, this match began with the late Jack White in 1969, and this year the Jokers were captained by John White, Jack’s son, while Ian Kearly captained the Infantry.

The event raised £467, much needed for clubhouse furniture, by way of entry fee and a raffle, and finished with a dinner where the losers paid for the wine.

Veterans’ Section

THERE were 33 entrants for the veteran’s Thursday competition – a self-entry, single division Stableford. Conditions were favourable and there were some good scores though 40 points proved elusive.

Alan Newnham (17) and Richard Lomax (11) emerged the leaders with 39 points each, the former winning on count-back.

In third place was Peter Mowat (16) scoring 38 points, while Karl Rogers (22) was fourth with 37 points followed by Geoff Ball (21) with 36 points. Bridport then won 4½ – 1½ at home against Ashley Wood later in the afternoon.

The Bush Plate, a medal event for last year’s EG medal winners, was won by Pat Baldwin with 102-32-70 and the runner-up was Sally Woolmington with 100-26-74.
