DORCHESTER captain James Dunham suggested the Dorset Cricket League should revert to awarding average points in light of rain cancellations as his title-chasing side now trail leaders Wimborne & Colehill by 23 points with three games left.

Dunham’s men, who sit third and face the Dorset Funeral Plan Premier League pacesetters at the Rec tomorrow (1pm), could have usurped the Minstermen by defeating them, had last week’s abandonment at Shroton not occurred.

For rain cancellations and abandonments, teams are given five points plus any bonus points earned, with Dorchester accruing just five compared to Wimborne’s 19 as they swept aside Bere Regis by nine wickets.

Dunham told Echosport: “I’m quite frustrated by it. It’s not a very good advert for the league. There’s a better way to go about it rather than five points.

“You could look at bringing back the average but I guess it’s for the committee to decide.

“From our perspective it doesn’t take (away from) the importance of the game. The shape of the game is probably a bit different in terms of we would not go ahead of Wimborne if we beat them.

“It just adds a bit more to it and makes us a bit more hungry to win. It will be a great game and hopefully we’ll come out victorious.”

Dorchester are without unavailable duo Todd Richards and George Foot.
