DORCHESTER Town manager Steve Thompson spoke of how massive the FA Cup if for non-League teams and the potential to ‘put your name on the map’ ahead of the Magpies’ clash at Wimborne Town today (3pm).

Thompson famously scored an equaliser for Woking as they drew 1-1 at Coventry City in the third round in 1997, becoming the first non-League club to avoid defeat on a Premier League ground in a competitive match.

Thompson said: “For non-League teams and teams in League One and League Two it is an absolutely massive competition in terms of revenue and in terms of getting your name on the map.”

Dorchester face a Wimborne side that they have already beaten this season, with a 4-2 win thanks to goals from Luke Winsper, Cameron Murray and Billy Lowes.

Thompson said that the competition retains the magic it always has and made reference to his famous goal.

Thompson said: “It is a chance to experience a good win but it is also a chance to progress further in the competition and you just never know who you get in the draw how far you can go.

“So it is a brilliant competition and for non-league club it retains all of the magic it always has.

“The competition has good for me, I was lucky enough to get a last minute equaliser against a premiership team playing for non-league Woking so that was a great memory for me and all of the Woking fans.”

However, Thompson added: “You can have these memories but you have to win games in the first rounds away to Wimborne to stand a chance of getting those memories.”
