DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson was frustrated with the Magpies’ second-half performance as they needed a last-minute goal from Callum Rose to secure a replay against Wimborne Town at the Clayson Stadium tomorrow night (7.45pm).

Toby Holmes had put Wimborne ahead in the 87th minute after Tom Blair was sent off for a second yellow card in the 60th minute, before Rose leapt high to head in the equaliser in the last minute.

Thompson said: “We did not play well at all in the second half but we stuck in there and we equalised with the last kick of the game.”

Thompson was full of praise for Rose however, who had an impressive game both offensively and defensively for Dorchester.

Thompson said: “I was not pleased with the second half’s ability performance even though we dug in when we were not playing well.

Callum, who had a magnificent game at the back, popped up with the equaliser.”

Referring to the replay, Thompson added: “Hopefully we (will) play a lot better. We started promisingly, we played well for the first 30 minutes of the game.

“We petered out in the last 15 minutes of the first half and like I said in the second half we just kicked long balls and did not really do our job in any sort of constructive way.”

When asked whether he agreed with Blair’s sending off, Thompson said he had no complaints and admitted he was disappointed with Blair getting himself sent off.

Thompson said: “I cannot argue with the second yellow for kicking the ball away, I think he had already been warned so I am very disappointed with that. To be fair even the first 20 minutes of the second half when he was on we were not playing particularly well but obviously that made it a lot harder for the last 25 minutes.”

Reflecting on their first half Thompson said: “Callum hit the bar with a 25-yard shot and then he had a header cleared off the line.

“Neither team created much in the first half. It was quite an even half, and a typical FA Cup tie with not a lot between the two teams and few chances.”

Despite emphasising his disappointment with their second half, Thompson did say that he was pleased with the battling that his players showed in getting that late goal to secure the replay.

Thompson said: “I was very disappointed with our second half performance, very disappointed with the sending off and just very pleased with the battling that we showed, even though we did not play well. The battling that a lot of players showed came good in the end with a last-minute equaliser.”
