DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson hailed the Magpies for a double-edged comeback after securing a dramatic 93rd-minute 2-1 win at Basingstoke Town.

Cameron Murray scored his fourth goal of the season to hand Thompson’s men all three points and complete a superb recovery after fellow winger Aaron Rodriguez had stubbed out Dragons’ midfielder Jack McKnight’s opener.

Dorchester’s victory earned them their first three points since September 1 – a 2-1 success over Hartley Wintney.

The result also soothed the pain of Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat on penalties to Poole Town in the City Security Services League Challenge Cup, having finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Speaking to Echosport, Thompson praised his team, who were without six players, for the way in which they “responded” to defeat against the Dolphins.

He said: “It’s nice to get back on the winning trail. It’s been a really tough couple of weeks losing Kingsley (Latham, goalkeeper), going out of the FA Cup, losing Harry (Kite) to unavailability and Callum Rose away.

“It’s been really tough, but the players responded very, very well. They put a lot into the game, as they did on Tuesday. We deserved to win that game two or three nil at least.

“You don’t always get what you deserve in football, but we certainly got what we deserved (against Basingstoke).

“Some teams never come back from going behind in a season and we’ve done it two or three times already.

“Hartley Wintney we went 1-0 down very early, (Basingstoke) we went 1-0 down and Wimborne, we managed to force a replay in the FA Cup. We’ve come back three times in games, so that’s very pleasing.”

In a goalless first half, in which few chances were created on a rain-soaked Camrose Stadium surface, Thompson felt Dorchester had had the better of play.

He said: “I thought we were slightly the better team first half and controlled most of the possession, but were wasteful in attacking positions.

“There were very few chances. The first real save a goalie had to make was when AJ (Sesay, goalkeeper) tipped over a header over the bar.

“First 15 minutes of the second half we didn’t play too well. We were on the back foot a little bit without conceding many chances.

“But then they scored with their first real chance of the second half. We were fortunate we bounced back straight away so that always helps when you go behind.”

He added: “The substitutes made a good impact as well.

“On 62 minutes we made two substitutions (Josh Williams and Callum Thompson) and they both had a big part to play in the rest of the game. Josh came on and set up the equaliser.”

With Murray stepping up to provide the winner, Thompson felt it was a result of being “camped” in Basingstoke’s half late on.

He said: “We were camped in their half for the last 15, 20 minutes. Attack after attack but didn’t obviously breach until a minute before the final whistle.

“A player tried staying on the ball just inside their half and we nicked the ball off him. It ran free to Aaron or Callum and played Cameron in. He cut inside the right-back and fired in the winner.”
