JULIEN Lawes came out on top of the up-and-coming Rhys Halcrow 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 as Weymouth Tennis Club held their men’s singles final.

The first set, a close affair, saw each player have his service broken twice and after some aggressive shot play it went to a tie break at six games all.

Both players tried to maintain consistency but, with Halcrow 7-6 up, he missed an overhead smash which would have won him the set and this seemed to be a key turning point as Lawes carried on his good form to edge the breaker 9-7.

The second set was again played at a high tempo but Halcrow started to look tired and some errors crept into his game. Perhaps the earlier missed opportunity weighed on his mind as he did not record another game.

For Lawes, it was revenge having lost to Halcrow 7-5, 7-5 last year in the semi-finals.
