DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson has called for his young Magpies side to find the “art” of “getting over the line” ahead of hosting Walton Casuals at the Clayson Stadium in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South tomorrow (3pm).

Thompson’s comment was made in relation to Dorchester’s inconsistent results, the latest of which saw Cameron Murray score a 93rd-minute winner to seal a 2-1 win at Basingstoke.

Three points against the Dragons brought to an end a four-game winless streak and now Thompson is targeting “back-to-back” triumphs against Casuals, who sidestepped into the league after a reshuffle.

On the prospect of facing Walton on Non-League Day, Thompson told Echosport: “I will ask a couple of people that I know up in that area that watch games – they might have only seen them in one game.

“We obviously want to put back-to-back victories together, I don’t think we’ve done that this season. That would be a good progression if we could do that.

“I do think we’re a young side and that inconsistency is renowned for young players. That would seem to bear out in the results.

“One of the hardest things in football is finding the art in yourself as a player of getting over the line. A lot of that does come with experience.

“A lot of players are very early on in their path in whatever level they may reach.”

Dorchester have so far amassed just four points from four home league games this season, but Thompson was unconcerned about the manner of the Magpies’ home performances.

He said: “We approach every game in the same way, even though we’ve got a 3G. I felt the last home game against Poole we should have won. We turned out a good performance on the 3G.

“It’s not like a (cloud) hanging over us that we can’t play well on the 3G, but we haven’t got as good results as we would’ve liked.”

Thompson’s search for a suitable striker has been a big factor in his tenure and the Magpies’ manager revealed he could have signed a Premier League striker were it not for league rules.

He said: “It’s tough going. There was one that I really liked but we can’t loan a player off a Premier League club outside of a loan window. There was a possibility to get one.

“I’m talking to a couple of EFL clubs at the moment and I spoke to a couple of players on the bench in the National League.

“The other way to go is to get someone from your own league. At the moment, players don’t want to leave at the start of the season.”

Midfielders Harry Kite and Tom Blair return from unavailability and an Achilles injury respectively, although Ash Pope (knee), Alex Stafie (ankle) and Kingsley Latham (internal bleeding) remain out.
