NOT content with the singles Weymouth ADC Summer title, Sam Ward went on to take the singles knock-out cup and also the team title in his debut season.

Playing alongside fellow debutants Matty Betts and Drew Tweedy, Ward formed part of the First Time Luckies who went all season without losing a single team game.

On a night that saw fours hours of solid tungsten thrown down at the Weymouth Angling Society headquarters, the blind pairs competition produced a great victory for Trevor Honnor and Chris Burton as they overcame the pairing of Andy Masters and Arnie Quinn in the final.

On paper and by league positions, Honnor and Burton went into the final as underdogs but this could not be further from what happened as they finished comfortable winners 4-0.

Ward completed his double of single titles by overcoming Andrew McDermott 4-2 in their final.

Ward led 2-0 but suddenly got pegged back by McDermott who found his range at the treble 20 and took the next two legs.

Ward came back fighting and took the fifth leg with a last-dart double five which was followed by a huge roar.

A 180 from McDermott in the sixth leg could not prevent defeat as Ward took the leg and the title.

After another successful season, organisers Paul Paice, Danny Aplin and Quinn said of their delight and future plans for the ADC winter season.

The organisers said: “The excitement of this new darts league just goes from strength to strength.

“Every week we are getting more and more players asking if they can join and the reality is we have to have a cap as the venue and the amount of playing time the players get is limited.

“We plan to put on a lot more comps outside of the league format just so we can keep it open to others that are interested.

“We’ve already added seven new players to the league and all of a high standard ranging from top leagues in Weymouth to Superleague and even county level.

“The biggest coup we feel we have is that current champion Ward has decided to make a u-turn on his decision to not part take in the winter and now put his name forward to defend his title.”

A major factor in this is the new format that is in place for the winter season, Paice added: “With the increase in players we feel its only right to open the play-off night up to more players.

“Last winter it was top seven that qualified and that has now increased to the top 12 with the top two players getting a bye in the first round on the night and the next 10 going into a blind draw.

“This has excited the current ADC players as the ones who qualified before knew before the finals night who they would be up against.

“It’s now a case of who brings their A game to the board at the right time and on the night.”
