Jon Bevan will fulfill the second of his season's goals tomorrow when he represents Great Britain and Ireland against America in the PGA Cup in Georgia.

The Wessex Golf Centre professional, who booked his place in the team via a play-off at the Glenmuir Club Professional Championship in June, notched up his first target by qualifying for the Open and is now eyeing a place in history as GB&I attempt to become the first to win on US soil.

The 40-year-old said: "The competition can't come soon enough. Everything else has just been getting in the way since I found out I was going in June and I just can't wait to get going.

"It would mean everything to be part of the team that wins on American soil," he added.

"I had two goals at the start of this year and I've managed to achieve both - to get in the PGA Cup team and be at The Open."

Buoyed by their victory at The K Club two years ago, the GB&I team will be eager to retain the Llandudno Trophy at the Reynolds Plantation's Oconee Course but Bevan is under no illusions about the size of the task that awaits them in America.

He admitted: "I think we're going there as serious underdogs but I'm hoping we'll be underestimated by them."

"I think our team is fantastic and it's a real good set of lads, who will all bring a little something different to the table."

Meanwhile PGA Cup captain Gary Alliss is delighted to have Bevan on his team.

He said: "Jon is probably the most outwardly determined player. I like him because he's got opinions and he's not afraid to tell you, I love that, I know I can rely on him.

"His determination in the play-off to get into the team was breathtaking."

Bevan admits he has been left awe-struck by the stunning Rees Jones-designed Oconee Course.

He said: "It was a long time getting round yesterday but we're all golf junkies and love hitting balls and how could you not enjoy this environment - it's stunning.

"The golf course is beautiful, the guys are all up for it and in good form. The course is very fair, it's long and it's wide and I'm really looking forward to it.

"With wide fairways and large greens, it's a classic US target golf track with a punishing finish stretch.

The full GB&I team is: Gary Alliss (captain), Andrew Barnett (North Wales GR, Denbighshire), Jon Bevan (Wessex GC, Weymouth), John Dwyer (Ashbourne GC, Co. Meath), Craig Goodfellow (Carlisle DR, Cumbria), Duncan Muscroft (Montecchia GC, Italy), Michael Nesbit (Westerhope GC, Newcastle), George Ryall (Players Club, Bristol), Danny Taylor (Swingers GC, Lichfield), Paul Wesselingh (Kedleston Park GC, Derby), James Whatley (Morley Hayes GC, Derbyshire).

Bevan is finishing the season in cracking form after achieving a comfortable two-shot victory in the Lansdown Pro-am.

The Wessex pro, who has managed several high finishes in the past month, was in flawless form to win the first prize of £623.

After a birdie at the par five opening hole he added others at the fourth, seventh, eighth and 16th for a five-under-par 66, two better than Graham Howell (Ferndown Forest).
