WEYMOUTH eased into the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy with a convincing 3-1 beating of Taunton Town at the Viridor Stadium.

Goals from Brandon Goodship, his 50th for the Terras, Stephane Zubar and Josh Wakefield eased the progression through, despite Matt Wright nodding in to narrow the scores to 2-1 midway through the second half.

There were two changes for the Terras, as Callum Buckley and Jordan Ngalo came in for Tiago Sa and Sam Sherring.

Buckley made his first start for Weymouth since returning from injury, while Terras’ fans will have been pleased with the sight of Ben Thomson on the bench as he made his return to the squad after injury.

The home side had the first sniff of a chance after three minutes, as Dan Sullivan almost played Matt Wright in on goal but Weymouth were able to clear the ball away.

The visitors then went close, when Abdulai Baggie curled a shot in towards goal from 25-yards out, but saw his shot come off the crossbar, before Wakefield put the rebound just wide of the post.

The Terras took an early lead after 13 minutes, when Goodship netted his 50th goal for the club when he slotted past Lloyd Irish after good work from Wakefield.

Three minutes later and the Terras had another opportunity to extend their lead, when Ben Adlesbury brought down Goodship on the edge of the box, but Goodship whipped the free-kick just over the bar.

There were then a couple of chances for each side in quick succession at the Viridor Stadium, as firstly Sullivan struck the ball wide from 20-yards out for the home side.

Calvin Brooks then did well to get space and set up Wakefield, who fired his shot well over the bar.

The Peacocks were growing into the encounter, as Keith Emmerson picked out Sullivan with a great ball, before Sullivan brought the ball down and fired across goal and wide for the home side.

After 29 minutes, Goodship tried another shot, this time from 25-yards out but it was a straight forward save for Taunton goalkeeper Irish.

Ashley Wells then had his turn to see a shot saved by Irish, as he tried an effort from inside the Taunton box.

Buckley then did well to set up Goodship from close range, but the Terras’ striker saw his shot from close range saved by Irish.

Sullivan then managed to get past two defenders and fire in a shot from distance that trickled wide of the Weymouth post.

Weymouth then broke forward and saw Goodship find Jordan Ngalo, whose cross into the box was claimed by Irish.

The two sides went in with Weymouth ahead, and it would not be long before they extended their lead, as Zubar smashed in from a cross into the box.

Weymouth almost made it three when Irish, who had a fantastic match, saved twice in quick succession from Wakefield and then Brooks.

However, Taunton grabbed a goal back when a free-kick was swung in by Ryan Brett and headed past Weymouth goalkeeper Jordan Seabright to narrow the scores after 62 minutes.

After 76 minutes, Sullivan saw another effort fly over the bar as the Peacocks went hunting an equaliser.

However, despite some good chances from the visitors it would be the Terras that further extended their lead, when Wakefield slammed home after some brilliant build-up play from Baggie with a goal to kill the tie off after 79 minutes.

Shortly after the goal, Sa and Sherring came on for Goodship and Buckley as Weymouth looked to see the game out.

Harry Baker nearly extended the lead late on when he fired in from a tight angle, only to see his shot blocked safely into the hands of Irish.

The full time whistle blew not long after, with Weymouth securing a good cup win at the hands of their Evo-Stik Southern Premier South rivals Taunton.

Weymouth now go into the draw, which will be made on Monday, with the next qualifying round ties set to be played on the weekend of November 10.

The Terras are next in league action on Saturday when they travel to Basingstoke Town (3pm).
